Artificial intelligence is a key driver of innovation for end-to-end digitalization in public administration. We develop open-source-based AI solutions using the ]init[ AI Platform as our technological foundation. We operate our AI apps securely in our own data center.

When people think of AI, many first think of the impressive – or sometimes disappointing – new AI apps that can generate text or images at the touch of a button. But it is only when AI models are custom-tailored and integrated into an organization’s workflows and applications that true value is created. Contrary to common assumptions, this is also possible with open-source solutions that meet the high data protection and data security requirements in Germany and the EU.

To make this possible, we have brought together specialists from various fields in an AI task force. They assess the opportunities presented by AI in public administration and quickly incorporate the technology into projects.

AI offers great potential, but is often not seen as a tool for existing systems. With the ]init[ AI Platform, we are making the technology accessible to public administrations and establishing new, future-proof standards.

Digital Sovereignty

The public sector has unique digitalization requirements – especially when it comes to AI. To ensure that positive scenarios don’t remain a distant dream, we continuously assess the opportunities and risks of AI in the public sector. The key question is: How do we reconcile the rapid evolution of AI with critical guidelines such as data protection, transparency, and traceability?

With our approach, we deliver on the promise of digital sovereignty by designing, developing, and operating AI applications in Germany. Whether as a proprietary cloud-based solution or using open-source models operated entirely in Germany or the EU:

  • On-premise solutions: Full data sovereignty
  • We have built the infrastructure for standalone AI servers with our own processing pipelines. This allows us to implement complex, computationally intensive tasks, such as semantic searches and AI chatbots.

  • For low data protection and data security requirements, e.g., in prototyping, we rely on scalable AI services in the cloud. These enable rapid proof-of-concepts or particularly cost-effective bulk processing of publicly available data.

Our AI strategy takes shape in the ]init[ AI Platform – an implementation platform that uses reusable components to enable the rapid deployment of user-friendly, trustworthy, and secure AI applications. The seamless integration of AI apps into end-to-end platforms achieves a high level of maturity in the end-to-end digitization and automation of administrative processes.     An AI-powered chatbot for prospective applicants that provides personalized, accurate information about the organization and helps reduce the workload on the HR department.

  • Faster and easier processing and creation of text-based information for and within internal workflows: creation of memos, consolidation and summarization of documents, preparation of cabinet and committee materials, and drafting of minutes
  • Automation in specialized procedures to increase efficiency, speed up processes, and reduce staffing requirements: Generation and preparation of applications, during processing and review, and in decision-making
  • Faster processing and supplementation of audiovisual information and content: Translations, subtitles for videos and live streams, voice-overs for text information in multiple languages, etc.
