With what we do as a company, we change society. We use the opportunities of digitalization to help our clients achieve more with fewer resources. We initiate process innovations and make suggestions for new things that allow people to break away from old structures. In short: ]init[ is on a sustainable path - as a digital company with social responsibility.

We make sustainability our theme. Because only those who are committed to their environment, society and sustainable business practices can strengthen their competitiveness and create lasting value. By assessing and analyzing the impact of all our business activities, we find answers to how we can make our contribution to a future worth living.

Our actions as a company have an impact. I want it to be a positive contribution to the future. That's why the careful use of resources is a matter of principle for me. However, the pandemic has also shown that we can achieve success here even faster. That's why we are steadying our efforts and taking a more consistent approach to sustainability." “

Harald Felling

Chief Executive Officer

We measure the development of our sustainable activities annually on the basis of environmental, social and governance factors. From the results, we derive targets and measures for our portfolio investments, site development and human resources development. The annual evaluation shows: We are on the right path to a sustainable corporate future - but there is still a lot to do.

Environment and digitalization – we can use the consequences of the pandemic sustainably

We are specialists for digital solutions. We work with our clients to develop digital procedures, smart services and new, leaner processes for the digital state and modern administration so that citizens no longer have to drive to the office and companies waste less mail and paper through automated, electronic processes.

We also live digitalization in our company and our work processes. We let employees travel more consciously - and only when it is essential. By strengthening remote working, we save trips to the office. Online meetings with our colleagues or clients have become the norm.

The pandemic also enabled us to raise our company-wide sustainability score to 70 out of 100 in 2020 - not least by increasing the proportion of remote-office-capable employees to 100 percent. The experience gained from the pandemic opens the doors for us to embark on a long-term path toward greater sustainability.

Our Measures

We have minimized our business travel from an average of 2,200 kilometers per employee in 2018 to 800 kilometers in 2019 and further to 300 kilometers in 2020. With Deutsche Bahn, our employees travel completely CO2-free on local and long-distance services.

Airplanes are much more harmful to the climate than other means of transportation. That's why we have revised our policy on air travel, approving it only if the duration of a rail trip between origin and destination exceeds four and a half hours. We have reduced our business-related flights from 1.39 flights per employee in 2018 to 0.94 in 2019 and to 0.18 in 2020.

We are committed to sustainable mobility in urban areas. Since a large number of employees come to the offices by bicycle, we have reallocated parking spaces to create more bicycle parking options. We are also developing solutions for flexible car and bike sharing that can be used by employees as needed. For e-cars, we have set up a first e-charging station at our Berlin site.

Small things, big impact: We have treated drinking water coming out of the tap - awarded by the "a tip : tap" initiative. We create green oases on our rooftop gardens where we harvest juicy fruit, healthy vegetables and fresh herbs. We pay attention to ecologically sustainable consumables, in meetings we mainly use regional products on the table and for events we plan with locally rooted suppliers.

Energy efficiency and responsibility

We are careful with our resources. This is most clearly demonstrated in our commitment to a resource-efficient data center.

Our measures

We obtain electricity from 100 percent renewable sources at all our sites. New office buildings are equipped as smart offices with energy-optimized heating, air-conditioning and lighting technology. We retrofit older buildings with modern sensor technology to increase energy efficiency. This has enabled us to reduce our CO2 emissions by 54 percent compared with the previous year, and by as much as 83 percent compared with 2018.

We operate one of three reference data centers nationwide with which the German Federal Environment Agency is researching the connection between environmental, energy and cost efficiency in data center operations. For the KPI4DCE 2.0 project, we make key figures and indicators absolutely transparent.

Due to multiple redundancy and reserve capacities, power consumption in the data center is high. We compensate the energetic base load by a particularly high energy and resource productivity. The Öko-Institut e. V. is researching this so-called rebound effect with our help in the MERU project.

When less computing power is required, we go into power-saving mode. The fine-grained monitoring and adaptive control of our server systems recognizes when the power of which components can be reduced - for example, at night and on weekends. This auto scaling allows us to dynamically scale resources and helps save valuable energy.

Society and human resources development

Diversity in practice, training for young people and opportunities for career changers are all part of our sustainable corporate culture. Many of our employees who stay with us for more than five years prove that we create a good climate based on diversity and inclusion in our day-to-day work.

„Our initiative for diversity in practice is having an impact. The proportion of women at ]init[ is 40 percent, far above the IT industry average of 16 percent. And one third of our managers are female.“

Sandra Valentin

Chief Operating Officer

Our measures

Young people receive qualified training with us. In 2020, we trained 14 apprentices and 11 dual students. 72 working students and 23 trainees gained their first professional experience with us.

The ]init[iative program supports personal volunteer work by employees. With corporate donations, we support community and social initiatives in making change possible.
