UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe: Powerful donation platform built on TYPO3

TYPO3 is a versatile open-source CMS. Back in 2019, we built an effective donation platform based on TYPO3 for UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe e.V. –  and we have been continuously developing it ever since. This ensures that refugees receive the support they need.

A breath of fresh air in the CMS

For us, the UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe e. V. website is a long-standing project in which we consistently put our TYPO3 expertise to full use. It is also a project close to our hearts, as UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe e. V. rescues refugees from dire situations around the world through more than 170 projects each year.

To fulfill its mission, the organization relies on donations and public support. The website plays a central role in this effort. It provides information about the work of UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe e. V., raises awareness about current emergencies, and enables direct and easy online donations.

To keep track of the information needs and usage behavior of both potential and existing donors and to offer them the best possible digital experience, we keep the donation platform up to date conceptually, visually, and technically.

Purpose of the Website

01

Fundraising

A wide range of informational and interactive modules all serve a single purpose: to make it clear that every donation counts. Thanks to an efficient infrastructure, online donations are processed quickly and easily on both the front end and the back end.

02

Information and Inspiration

Insights into the organization’s work, specific donation projects, and the impact that each individual can make with their donation. Another goal here is to build donor loyalty.

03

Digital Business Card

As a German partner of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the organization provides information on how it creates opportunities and develops lasting solutions for refugees.

TYPO3 Tailored to Your Needs

TYPO3 was already in use as the website’s foundation when we took over the project in 2018. As part of our comprehensive project management, we have been consistently developing the existing TYPO3 framework ever since. Our focus has always been on the donor journey. To increase donations through the website, we are expanding the donation features and simplifying the donation process. This allows donors to choose exactly how they want to support the work of UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe e. V. – for example, through monthly recurring donations, donations for specific relief supplies, or by setting up their own online fundraising campaigns.

In addition, we’re continuously optimizing the user experience: thanks to a new, modern off-canvas navigation, users can intuitively explore the topics covered by UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe e. V. and easily learn about aid projects. To further highlight this aspect, we developed an interactive world map that displays crisis hotspots and links them to specific donation options. Interactive knowledge quizzes also help draw visitors’ attention to crisis hotspots and urgently needed support.

TYPO3 Extensions and Editorial Workflows

We develop the diverse modules and features of the donation platform particularly efficiently because we rely on extensions provided by the TYPO3 community. If customizing these extensions doesn’t perfectly meet the needs of UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe e. V., our TYPO3 team develops its own extensions. This allows us to continually maximize the website’s effectiveness – for example, through exceptionally user-friendly donation forms that let visitors support aid projects directly with just a few clicks.

For the online editorial team at UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe e. V., achieving optimal search engine rankings is very important. That’s why we’ve implemented SEO modules that make search engine optimization easy. Editors receive tips and suggestions for SEO optimization as soon as they start creating content. We also simplify the upload and integration of photos by using an extension that automatically formats the media for various formats. To ensure that new editorial team members can quickly familiarize themselves with the CMS, our content management team continuously maintains and updates an editorial handbook and creates editorial guidelines that assist in daily work with the CMS.

A Long-Term Success Story

The donation platform for UNO-Flüchtlingshilfe e. V. is one of our long-standing TYPO3 projects that consistently demonstrates one thing: complex requirements for a CMS can always be easily implemented thanks to the versatility and flexibility of TYPO3. This allowed us to develop the technically ambitious yet editorially user-friendly TYPO3 platform into the daily driver of an efficient online fundraising campaign.
