Are you well prepared for the Accessibility Enhancement Act? Accessible websites and apps

Starting in mid-2025, companies’ digital products and services must comply with the requirements of the Accessibility Enhancement Act. Failure to do so may result in heavy fines. Work with us to gain clarity, minimize risks, and take advantage of the many opportunities offered by accessible digital communication.

Digital accessibility concerns us all. Even a temporary limitation – such as tendonitis, poor lighting, or a noisy environment – is enough to put us at a disadvantage when using digital products. In these situations, we cannot begin to imagine the challenges faced by people with permanent disabilities.

  • People with severe disabilities in Germany

    7.8 million

  • People with severe disabilities over the age of 65 in Germany

    58 percent

  • By 2030, 29 percent of the population in Germany will be that age or older

    65 years

  • Disabilities that develop later in life

    96 percent

Watch the webinar recording "Ready for the BFSG?" (in German language)

In this webinar recording in German language, you will learn:

  • Whether and how you are affected—and how you can meet the requirements in a timely manner.
  • How to systematically keep track of the BFSG requirements, derive implementation criteria, and implement them in a planned manner.
  • What it takes to optimize PDFs offered digitally so that they comply with the law.
  • Which standards for back-end and front-end development create a future-proof foundation for digital accessibility.

Our BFSG team will explain this complex topic in an easy-to-understand way and show you tools, checklists, and tips that you can put to use right away.

How can we address you

These examples make it clear: In a digital world, websites and apps must be conceived, designed, and implemented with a comprehensive approach to accessibility from the very beginning. Only in this way can everyone participate equally and on an equal footing in a digital society.

The Act to Strengthen Accessibility

Back in 2021, the German Bundestag passed the Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSG). It transposes the European Accessibility Act into national law. The law’s entry into force on June 28, 2025, marked an important step toward ensuring equal and non-discriminatory participation for people with disabilities, impairments, and older adults.

Since then, companies have been required to ensure accessible digital business transactions. Specific requirements are defined in a regulation, and non-compliance is subject to heavy fines of up to 100,000 euros and sales bans. In addition, companies face a high risk of receiving formal warnings.

How Businesses Benefit from Digital Accessibility

  • User Experience

Accessible websites are easier for everyone to use because they feature clear structures, easy-to-read content, and user-friendly navigation. This results in a better overall user experience and increased satisfaction.

  • Competitive advantage

Websites and apps that are accessible open up new markets and target audiences, as they can now be used by people with permanent or temporary disabilities.

  • Cost savings

Accessibility must be viewed holistically and incorporated into digital projects from the very beginning, across all disciplines. The effort and costs involved in this approach are significantly lower than those associated with retrofitting accessibility.

  • SEO benefit

In project teams, every member must prioritize accessibility and incorporate it into their work. This is how the greatest efficiency and synergy benefits are achieved. For example, a better organic search engine ranking thanks to a clean HTML structure.

  • improved image

The value of a brand is further enhanced by placing equal emphasis on the needs of all people.

  • Legal Compliance

Companies that proactively implement the Accessibility Enhancement Act minimize legal risks and disputes.

A 25-person team of specialists in UX/UI, BITV self-tests, front-end development, plain language, and accessible documents advises and supports the public sector in implementing the strict requirements of the Accessible Information Technology Ordinance (BITV 2.0), which has been mandatory for public websites since 2021.

We are now making this expertise available to the private sector, as the BFSG is extending the accessibility requirements of the BITV 2.0, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and the Disability Equality Act (BGG) to the private sector.

We advise companies with foresight and pragmatism on how the Accessibility Enhancement Act affects them. I am excited to work with a highly skilled team to put digital accessibility into practice and thus make a valuable contribution to an inclusive society.

Our Project Approach

01

Laying the groundwork

We examine all aspects of accessibility and define quality and acceptance criteria for a successful project.

02

Check-up

We closely examine digital business processes and business logic to identify accessibility requirements.

03

Kick-off & Team-Building

We raise awareness of accessibility by involving all stakeholders and making them part of the project team.

04

Preliminary concept

Based on our analysis, we have identified areas for improvement, which we are systematically addressing through our design, UX/UI, development, and QA processes.

05

Detailed Planning & Design

As we refine the details of the measures, we continuously verify compliance with quality and acceptance criteria. This ensures that the outcome meets the requirements of BITV 2.0/BFSG.

06

Implementation

The UX, development, and QA teams engage in close peer review. We share interim results with our clients and respond quickly to changing requirements.

07

Crowd Testing

By gathering targeted feedback from users with disabilities, we can further optimize websites and apps. This allows us to design digital products with high usability.
